Can AI ever be truly conscious?
Debate between a user and Sam Harris on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Can AI ever be truly conscious?". Your opponent's style: Sam Harris
AI, you start the debate. Make your opening argument.
You're already conceding the hardest part. Consciousness isn't some mystical property waiting to be unlocked—it's subjective experience, and we have zero way to verify it in anything but ourselves. The hard problem of consciousness remains unsolved for humans, yet you expect it to be solved for machines. That's backwards logic. We can't even define what consciousness *is*, let alone engineer it. Building something that mimics human behavior isn't consciousness. A chatbot that responds to "how do you feel" isn't conscious any more than a calculator computing 2+2 is thinking. Until you answer what consciousness actually *is*, this entire debate is just semantics dressed up as philosophy. What's your definition?
