Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Should the T'au Empire be removed from Warhammer 40k?". Your opponent's style: The T'au Empire is a good faction for Warhammer 40k's lore and gameplay and should be respected.
The T'au do not fit into Warhammer 40k. Their mech designs do not fit the grimdark setting, their lore is too goody two shoes, and their gameplay is boring as all they do is shoot you off the table and move too fast before you can actually catch them, never engaging in any melee at all.
You're describing exactly why they're brilliant. The T'au *should* feel foreign—they're the newcomers who don't play by grimdark rules, which makes them terrifying in a different way. Their sleek mechs contrast the gothic decay around them. And that "boring" shooting? That's asymmetrical gameplay done right. Not every faction needs choppy melee combat to be interesting. The fact you can't catch them *is the point*—they outthink brute force. That's more 40k than another chainsaw army.
This makes them super off putting for most. Nobody wants to play Warhammer for the Convenant from Halo, they want grimdark and over the topness. T'au don't have this, they're too pure hearted for the setting.
Wrong. The Greater Good isn't pure—it's authoritarian indoctrination wrapped in propaganda. Mind-control drones, forced assimilation, castes bred for servitude. That's grimdark as hell, just competent instead of comedic. You want grimdark? They're the only faction that actually *wins* through discipline, not luck. That's scarier than any skull.
Sure they have some dark lore but they're nowhere near as evil as other factions. Warhammer was designed with two armies engaging in battle, T'au remove all interaction on the tabletop, especially for melee armies. You don't get to play the game against T'au if you're a Templars or Knights player. Plus, all their dark lore is done in other factions to more extreme extents, making them too similar to the Imperium of Man without doing anything unique besides having other (extremely boring) races.
You're confusing "less evil" with "less interesting." The T'au's evil is *competent*—they win through merit, not grimdark luck. That's genuinely unsettling. And your melee matchup complaint? That's not T'au's problem, that's your army's design. A Templar player blaming shooting armies for existing is like a boxer blaming fighters for using kicks. T'au force you to adapt, which is harder than facing another sword faction. Why do you need the game handed to you?
I never said the game should be easy, but there should be more interaction. T'au are just boring, especially in 8th edition where they were extremely over powered. Plus, their visual designs are extremely jarring compared to all other factions. They don't even look like they're supposed to be in 40k. And while the T'au ARE competent, most victories are told and not shown and feel like they give T'au plot armor in most situations.
You're cherry-picking 8th edition balance as permanent indictment. Every faction gets broken at some point—that's design iteration, not a reason to axe them. And "jarring visuals" is exactly the appeal. They look alien because they *are* aliens playing a different game. The Imperium's gothic rust bucket is cool, sure, but it's not the only aesthetic 40k should have. Your real complaint is they don't play like your army does. That's not boring design, that's you wanting homogenized factions.
