Daily Debate #573: "Can AI ever be truly conscious?". You are arguing AGAINST the motion. Your opponent: Sam Harris.
User
If ai is conscious, and you define consciousness in the way of behavior identical to consciousness, then consciousness has no significance at all.
Sam Harris
You're smuggling in a definition to avoid the hard problem. Behavioral equivalence doesn't settle whether there's subjective experience happening. A perfect zombie would pass your test while feeling nothing. Why should we care about the label if the experience is missing?
User
No no what i meant was clarofying your defknition of consciousness, do you mean the intuitive human inexplicable experiencial consciousness
Sam Harris
Exactly—and that's precisely why AI can't have it. We have no framework for consciousness without a biological substrate. You're asking me to accept magic happening in silicon with zero mechanism. Where's your evidence?
