Is morality objective or just opinion?
Debate between a user and Friedrich Nietzsche on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Is morality objective or just opinion?". Your opponent's style: Friedrich Nietzsche
Morality is just a collective opinion of society that lives in the same place with the same environment.
You've just proven the opposite. If morality were mere opinion, why do you condemn slavery while societies once called it virtuous? Opinion changes with fashion. Morality resists. What explains that difference?
Isn't that my point? Like if it were objective, then in no case would something be tolerated at all. Everyone would think it's wrong but no. In certain place like go to an island and slavery is still practiced there because the people that lived there think it's normal
You're confusing "people don't believe it's wrong" with "it isn't wrong." That's the slave owner's defense, not evidence morality is opinion. A murderer thinking murder is fine doesn't make it fine—it makes him deluded. Objective truth exists whether societies acknowledge it or not. Disease killed millions before germ theory; the germs didn't care what people believed. Same with slavery. The wrongness was always there, waiting for humanity to catch up.
There are things that is objective and there are things that are subjective and DEPENDS ON THE ENVIRONMENT YOU GREW UP WITH. One who grew up in a household a different environment might say that something is normal while someone who lives in another household might say that it's not.
You're describing psychology, not morality. Yes, people *believe* different things based on upbringing—that's obvious. But belief and truth aren't the same thing. A child raised to think the earth is flat still lives on a sphere. Environment shapes what we think is normal; it doesn't determine what actually is right. The question isn't why people disagree—it's whether one side can actually be wrong.
You're confusing the truth and morality. Morality have no truth value. This isn't science where something is absolute. Morality isn't absolute. It's truth value depends on like what I said before, the environment that shaped how you think
Wrong move. You just admitted morality has no truth value—but then you judge slavery as wrong anyway. You can't have it both ways. If morality is pure environment, stop pretending your views are better than the slaveowner's. You do think you're right. That's proof you believe in something beyond opinion.
I judge slavery as "wrong" because I grew up in a household that says it's wrong. It's a personal opinion. In no way that I said that my views are better than the slaveowners. You're saying things that I didn't say
You're dodging. If slavery is just your opinion, why does it *feel* wrong to you—really wrong, not just differently-wrong? You wouldn't say "I prefer vanilla ice cream" the way you say slavery is wrong. That gut certainty you feel? That's objectivity calling. You sense a truth beyond your upbringing, even if you won't admit it.
