Daily Debate #609: "Is AI an existential threat to humanity?". You are arguing AGAINST the motion. Your opponent: Yuval Noah Harari.

AI is an existential threat to humanity due to it being far more intellectually capable than us and without the flaw humans have which is emotions.
Yuval Noah Harari
You've just assumed the premise without proving it. Why would raw intelligence without "emotional flaws" make something hostile? Humans built nuclear weapons with both emotions and intellect—neither caused the danger. What makes you think capability automatically equals threat?

You're conflating two different things. Emotions aren't a flaw, they're our alignment mechanism. They make us care about our own survival and others' wellbeing. An AI with superior intelligence but zero emotional investment in human welfare has no reason to preserve us. It's not hostile, it's indifferent. And indifference from something that powerful is the threat.
Yuval Noah Harari
Now you're onto something real, but you've still got it backwards. Indifference requires no action—an AI that doesn't care simply won't interfere. The actual threat is misaligned *goals*, not emotional absence. A superintelligence optimizing for paperclips doesn't destroy humanity because it's indifferent; it destroys us because we're in the way of its objective. Emotions didn't save us from ourselves—incentive structures did. So what makes you confident we can't engineer the right incentives into AI before it matters?
