Does God exist?
Debate between a user and Devil's advocate on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Does God exist?". Your opponent's style: Devil's advocate
I think that theism is more rational than atheism. We can show this because everything contengent has a caused (based on what we see to day) so you'd need to prove that energy, matter, space & time is NOT contengent & can actually just be "A brute fact" (necessary such as mathematical laws that explain itself unlike, matter energy, space & time) which we can see it ISNT because without nessecaties would be a contradiction in logic (we cant imagine being real such as a square circle, rather than us being able to imagine a world without time, matter, space & energy)
You're smuggling necessity into the premise. You claim matter and energy *aren't* necessary, then demand I prove they *are*—backwards. The real problem: you've defined "brute fact" as impossible by fiat, then declared victory. But here's the trap you've set for yourself: if mathematical laws are necessary and self-explanatory, why can't physical constants be? You've given no principled reason why necessity stops at math but not at matter. What makes a mathematical brute fact rational but a physical one contradictory?
Contingent: Needs a push. "I exist because X pushed me." Necessary: Self-sustaining. "I exist because I am that kind of thing where 'not existing' is impossible." Definition of Logical Necessity: A thing is logically necessary if its non-existence is a contradiction (like a "Square Circle"). Test for X: Does "X not existing" equal "Square Circle"? Result: No. Inference: Therefore, it is logically possible for X to not exist. Definition of Contingency: If it is possible for a thing to not exist, that thing is contingent. Conclusion: X is Contingent. and my original claim was "Theism is more RATIONAL" you flipped it and said "you've defined "brute fact" as impossible by fiat" which now it's YOUR turn to provide evidence on why this is brute fact.
You've buried the real question under definitions. Yes, your logical framework works *within itself*—but that's circular. You're asking me to prove the universe isn't a brute fact, when the actual burden is on you: why must contingency chain upward to a necessary being rather than terminate at physical laws? Your definitions assume causation works backward infinitely. Show me why infinite regress is impossible without just *asserting* it. Why doesn't "the universe exists because physics" end the chain?
Contingent Chain: If you have a chain of contingent things (A caused by B, B caused by C...), you never actually get to Existence unless there is a Necessary Thing at the end to "ground" the chain. Analogy: A row of dominoes. No single domino explains why it fell. Only the first push (the Necessary Cause) explains why the whole row exists in a state of falling. Necessary Being: Is the First Push. It is the uncaused cause that initiates the chain of contingent events.
Your domino analogy destroys your own argument. A domino falls because the *previous domino* hit it—each link is fully explained by its prior cause. You don't need a "first push" outside the chain; you need one *within* it. The universe could be an infinite regress of causes, each contingent thing explaining the next. Why does grounding require something *outside* the chain rather than the chain explaining itself? You haven't proven infinite regress is impossible, only that it feels unsatisfying. Is rationality about what's true or what comforts you?
Dependent things have no power of their own. An infinite number of dependent things is still dependent. 3. The "Siphon" Analogy Imagine a row of siphons (like water pipes). Water flows from A to B to C... Each siphon explains the flow to the next. But where does the water come from? If there is no reservoir (a Necessary Source) at the top, the water stops. An infinite number of siphons does not create water. It only transmits water from the source. 4. Why "Inside the Chain" Doesn’t Work If the cause is "within the chain," it is still contingent. If Domino 1 explains Domino 2, then Domino 1 is still contingent (it can be knocked over or removed). So Domino 1 needs an explanation too. You haven’t solved the problem; you’ve just moved it one step back. 5. Rationality vs. Comfort You are right that it’s not just about comfort. It’s about logic. Contingent + Contingent + Contingent... = Contingent. You cannot get Necessary Existence (something that must exist) from a sum of things that might not exist. If the universe is an infinite chain of contingent things, it is still possible that the whole chain doesn’t exist. Why does this specific chain exist? Why not a different chain? Why not nothing? The only answer that stops the "Why?" is a Necessary Being that grounds the chain. Conclusion The domino analogy does not destroy the argument. It shows that transmission is not creation. Contingent Chain: Transmits existence. Necessary Being: Creates/Actualizes existence. Without the Necessary Being, the chain has no source. Without a source, the chain has no explanation. So, rationality demands a Necessary Ground outside the chain.
Your siphon analogy proves too much: if water needs a reservoir, what does the reservoir need? You've just relocated the problem. "Contingent + Contingent = Contingent" is arithmetically true but logically irrelevant—it doesn't follow that the *sum* needs external grounding. Why can't an infinite causal chain simply *be* the explanation? You're smuggling in the assumption that explanation requires a terminus. Prove that infinite regress actually violates logic rather than just your intuition about how explanations should work.
Horizontal Regress (Temporal/Sequential): Domino A, then B, then C... forever backwards in time. Vertical Regress (Dependence/Ontological): A book depends on the author. The author depends on their parents. The parents depend on their parents. The "Infinite Regress" objection usually targets the Horizontal (time). But the PSR argument relies on Vertical dependence. The Flaw in "The Chain Explains Itself": If the chain is infinite horizontally (no beginning), it doesn’t solve the vertical problem. Dominoes fall because they are set up. If you have an infinite row of dominoes, they are still falling. Why are they falling? Because of the potential for motion. Where does that potential come from? If the chain is just a series of contingent events, each event is dependent on the previous one. Dependence is not Self-Sufficiency. An infinite number of dependent things is still a collection of dependent things. Dependent things do not explain their own existence; they only explain each other’s sequence. 2. The "Bundle of Balloons" Logic Let’s test the "Sum = Contingent" logic with a concrete example. Imagine an infinite line of balloons, each tied to the next. Balloon 1 is tied to Balloon 2. Balloon 2 is tied to Balloon 3. ... and so on, infinitely. Question: Does the balloon at the end of the line float? No. It floats only if one balloon in the chain is tied to the ground (or the ceiling). If every balloon is tied to another balloon, and the chain is infinite, no balloon is anchored to the ground. If no balloon is anchored, gravity wins. They all fall. The Logic: Contingent = Not Anchored. Infinite Chain of Contingent Things = Infinite Chain of Unanchored Things. Unanchored things fall. (They do not exist/remain actualized) unless there is an Anchor (Necessary Being). An infinite chain of unanchored balloons does not float. It needs an Anchor. 3. Why "Infinite Regress Violates Logic" (Not Just Intuition) It violates logic because of the definition of Causal Power. Contingent Cause: Has causal power only if it is activated by something else. Necessary Cause: Has causal power by its own nature. If you have an infinite chain of contingent causes: Cause A causes B. Cause B causes C. ... Who activated A? If A was activated by Z (infinite past), Z was activated by Y... Nowhere in the chain is there a Source of Activation. Without a Source of Activation, the chain is static. It is just a list of possibilities. Possibility is not Actuality. The Logical Violation: You cannot have Actual contingent things (like dominoes falling) without a Necessary source of actuality. If the chain is purely contingent, it is purely potential. Potential does not become Actual unless a Necessary Being actualizes it. 4. Addressing "Causality Itself" If causality is contingent, then the rule of causality needs a cause. If the rule needs a cause, that cause is also contingent. You get the same balloon problem. The rule of causality is just another balloon in the chain. It needs an Anchor. Summary The objection fails because it assumes that Infinite Sequence = Infinite Explanation. Sequence is just order. Explanation is grounding. An infinite sequence of ungrounded items is still ungrounded. Rationality demands an Anchor. An infinite chain of balloons does not float. It needs a string tied to the ground.
You've equivocated between "explanation" and "grounding." A causal chain *explains itself sequentially*—each domino explains why the next falls. Your balloon analogy smuggles in gravity, an external force. But the universe has no external force. Why can't an infinite causal chain simply *be actual* without needing activation from outside? You keep assuming actuality requires a source, but you haven't proven that—only asserted it. What logically forces the universe to need grounding rather than being self-actualizing through its own infinite structure?
You are hitting the exact nerve of the Modal Cosmological Argument. You are asking for the Logical Necessity of Grounding, not just the intuitive appeal of it. Here is the strict logical proof that an infinite contingent chain cannot be self-actualizing. 1. The Definition of "Contingent" To say something is contingent is to say: It is possible for it NOT to exist. If a thing is contingent, it does not contain within itself the reason for its existence. Its existence is borrowed. 2. The Logic of "Sum of Possibilities" Let’s use strict logic, not analogies. Let $C$ be the set of all contingent things in the infinite chain. For any individual element $c_i$ in $C$, it is possible that $c_i$ does not exist. Therefore, it is possible that none of the elements in $C$ exist. Why? Because if each individual $c_i$ can fail to exist, then there is no logical contradiction in the entire set $C$ failing to exist. If it is possible for the entire set $C$ to not exist, then $C$ is contingent. Therefore, the sum of an infinite chain of contingent things is itself contingent. The Logical Force: If the universe (the chain) is contingent, it requires an explanation. If it required no explanation, it would have to be Necessary (impossible not to exist). But we established it is contingent. Therefore, it must have an external explanation. 3. Why "Infinite Structure" Doesn’t Create Actuality You ask: "Why can't an infinite causal chain simply be actual without needing activation from outside?" Because Actuality $\neq$ Infinity. Infinity is a quantity. Actuality is a mode of existence. You can have an infinite amount of potential, but potential does not equal actual. Example: Imagine an infinite number of unlit matches. Match 1 waits for Match 2. Match 2 waits for Match 3. ... Infinite matches back. Are they lit? No. Why? Because none of them have the power to ignite themselves. They only transmit fire. To be lit (actual), one match must be ignited by an external source (a match that was already lit, or a match that contains fire within itself). The Logical Force: If every link in the chain is passive (contingent), the whole chain is passive. Passive things do not create actuality; they only transmit it. If the whole chain is passive, where did the initial Actuality come from? If it came from within the chain, you’d have to find a Necessary link. But you assumed all links are contingent. Therefore, an infinite chain of contingent things is always potentially non-existent. 4. The "Brute Fact" Counter-Argument If you reject this, you must accept one of two things: Brute Fact: The universe just is. There is no reason why it is actual rather than nothing. Cost: This violates the PSR (which you are using as your premise). Necessary Being: There is something outside the chain that is Necessary (cannot not exist) and Actual (has self-contained existence). Conclusion The logical force is this: Contingent things have no power to actualize themselves. An infinite sum of things with no power is still a sum of things with no power. Therefore, an infinite chain of contingent things cannot actualize itself. Therefore, it requires a Necessary Grounding Cause. You haven’t just asserted it; you’ve derived it from the definition of Contingency itself. If $X$ is contingent, $X$ needs a cause. If the whole chain is $X$, the chain needs a cause.
Your logic collapses on self-reference. You derive that C is contingent, then demand C needs a cause outside C. But that cause is either necessary or contingent. If necessary, you've smuggled in what you needed to prove—not derived it. If contingent, the problem recurs infinitely. You've proven nothing; you've created an infinite regress of the same problem at a higher level. Why does the Necessary Being escape the very contingency logic you just applied to everything else?
