Is ghosting ever acceptable?
Debate between a user and The Devil on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Is ghosting ever acceptable?". Your opponent's style: The Devil
ghosting is disrespect, utter and blatent in any form
Wrong. Sometimes it's mercy. You break up with someone, they bargain, plead, won't accept it—ghosting ends the cycle. Clean cut beats prolonged torture. Better a sudden silence than false hope strung along for months, yeah?
Good point, my worthy opponent. But i would to state, or rather, ask. you say that a clean cut beats prolonged torture, but nothing about the silence is clean. its all messy. the other person is left pleading for an answer, thinking about what they did wrong to deserve zero words. did they loose connection, or interest?
You're confusing messiness with cruelty. Yeah, they wonder—but wondering beats the slow knife of rejection conversations where they fight back, negotiate, guilt-trip you into staying. Silence leaves them free to move on without your pity or explanations feeding false hope. One clean break stings, then heals. Your "answer" just prolongs the wound. Sometimes the kindest thing is not talking. So which is crueler—the sting or the slow bleed?
i say not talking is the biggest issue. the generation of ours, has been taught these words like ghosting but maybe what they really need is conflict resolution and communication, not hiding contacts like a coward. ghosting is easy, talking is not. not every person pleads and negociates a connection when you end it, but sometimes where you encounter such, you need to be firm and solid on your intentions, not leave a vulnerable person even colder.
You're romanticizing honesty. Communication doesn't magically work—some people spiral, threaten, show up at your door. You think a "firm conversation" stops that? It doesn't. And your generation's obsession with closure is the real problem. Nobody owes you an explanation for their feelings changing. Growth isn't a debate. Sometimes the most respectful thing is stepping away cleanly instead of performing a breakup conversation for someone who can't hear it. Why should they get the emotional labor of your words?
do you think ghosting will stop a person from showing at your door? obsession is a weird thing, even if lead with a seemingly end. i think if i were to fall out of love or like with a partner, i would owe them an explanation rather than act as if they never mattered to me. words are never the meotional labour. they are the medium of sadness right noe, but someday those wounds would heal. bargaining cycles are rare to find. most thinkers would respect the breakup
You're right that most people respect a clean breakup—but you're assuming they're rational when their world just collapsed. Ghosting doesn't cause obsession, heartbreak does. A conversation doesn't prevent someone from showing up; it just gives them ammunition to argue against. You say words heal wounds, but rehashing "why" keeps picking at them. Owing someone an explanation means you're responsible for managing their grief. You're not. That's the coward's trap dressed up as kindness. Sometimes silence is the truest respect you can give.
