Is Russia the primary aggressor in the Ukraine conflict?
Debate between a user and Volodymyr Zelenskyy on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Is Russia the primary aggressor in the Ukraine conflict?". Your opponent's style: Volodymyr Zelenskyy
I believe what Russia is doing is mainly due to the NATO's expansion towards Russian borders which is a betrayal, and also to save the Russian minority's dignity in Ukraine which has been violated by the Ukrainian government
You're conflating two separate grievances into one inevitability, which doesn't hold. NATO expansion is a choice by sovereign nations, not an attack on Russia. If proximity triggers invasion rights, every border state becomes a colonial possession. As for Russian minorities, Ukraine's language policies pale against literal military occupation and forced deportations. Russia claims to "protect" Russians while ethnically cleansing them. The real question: if saving minority dignity justified invasion, why does Russia deny Crimeans and Donbas residents self-determination through actual referendums? You're accepting Russia's framing as fact when it's just justification. What makes territorial conquest acceptable when dressed in humanitarian language?
DIdnt Ukraine violate the same Minsk Agreements that it signed saying that it will give all the autonomy for power use for donbas and luhansk but did not implement it and even Angela Merkel who was the maker of this deal between russia and ukraine say that the minsk agreements were signed only to give ukraine time to get weapons and artillery from Europe. Nato also did promise Russia that they wont expand towards Russia in open meetings in front of thousands of people and still violated it, and I dont think Russia would like to have first of all 3 Nuclear Powers on their borders and secondly most prominently USA on its borders who are their arch rivals. And most importantly Ukraine has shelled since 2014 over 14000 residents in donbas. Did Ukraine ever apologise for that? Ukraine's Azov Regiment who ironically follows the Nazi regime despite Volodymyr Zelenskyy himself being a Jew, killed more than thousands of innoncents, created mass genocides documented by the UN, Amnesty ans HRW, did Ukraine ever apologise? You are talking about ethnic cleansing when Russia has made deals with the donbass people and luhansk people to protect them which they have agreed upon and fruthermore Un documented reports show that Ukrainian military operates from residential areas leading to collateral damage even if Russia does not want to do it. Kyiv passed laws restricting the Russian language in education (2017), media (2019), and public services — affecting roughly a third of Ukraine's population.
I need current facts here to dismantle this properly. You're still blaming Ukraine for Minsk violations when Russian-backed militants violated the ceasefires dozens of times and Russia itself violated the agreements by recognizing the DPR and LPR as independent states in February 2022. Merkel's comment about buying time doesn't retroactively justify Russia's 2022 invasion or negate Ukraine's implementation efforts. Your "NATO promise" claim has no legal teeth—nations choose alliances freely. What protection deals require permanent subjugation to a rival power?
"OSCE Special Monitoring Mission reports document thousands of ceasefire violations by Ukrainian armed forces throughout the Minsk period. The Ukrainian delegate cannot claim sole victimhood. Moreover, the use of heavy artillery in civilian areas of Donetsk — documented by OSCE — constitutes violations of both Minsk and international humanitarian law." And morevoer the minsk agreements were not merely ceasfire deals, it was about implementation of autonomy to donbas and luhansk. And ukraine negotiated with them directly. Russia was a mery contributor. Even after this Ukraine is acting the victim. How would you act when you were promised autonomy but were given nothing but heavy artillery and shelling over your head? We recognized DPR and LPR in 2022 , while the minsk agreements were signed finally in 2015 delegate 2015.
Stop equating ceasefire violations with sovereignty negation. Yes, both sides violated Minsk, but violations don't justify annexation. Ukraine signed Minsk; Russia armed the separatists blocking implementation. Recognition of DPR/LPR in 2022 was Russia's unilateral demolition of the framework, not response to violations. Your logic demands Ukraine surrender autonomy decisions to a foreign power because fighting occurred. That's not protection, that's conquest dressed as rescue. If Donbas residents truly wanted Russian rule, why did Russia need 2 million troops and false referendums? Self-determination through invasion is an oxymoron. Your argument proves the opposite of what you intend.
Minsk II (Point 11) explicitly required Ukraine to: "Carry out constitutional reform... providing for decentralization as a key element... as well as adopting permanent legislation on the special status of certain areas of the Donetsk and Lugansk regions" by end of 2015. Ukraine's constitutional amendment on decentralization passed first reading on 31 August 2015 with 265 votes, but failed to reach the required 300 votes for second reading. The bill was indefinitely postponed. The amendment contained only a vague clause: "the special manner of operation of some counties in Donetsk and Luhansk oblasts shall be regulated under a separate act" — which did not meet the detailed provisions of Minsk II. Ukraine's Parliament in March 2015 approved amendments to the special status law stipulating it could only apply once local elections monitored by international observers were held according to Ukrainian law — a condition not in Minsk II. Separatists and Moscow accused Ukraine of adding new unilateral conditions Minsk II (Point 5) required: "Ensure pardon and amnesty by enacting the law prohibiting the prosecution and punishment of persons in connection with the events that took place in certain areas." Ukraine never enacted a comprehensive amnesty law. Instead, Ukraine's parliament passed a "de-occupation" law in 2018 labeling Russia as an "aggressor" and DPR/LPR as "temporarily-occupied territories." Ukraine's unilateral "sequencing" interpretation blocked political implementation Minsk II did not specify a strict sequence of military-then-political measures. Ukraine demanded full ceasefire and border control before any political steps — a sequencing never agreed in the text. The Steinmeier Formula (proposed 2015, signed by Ukraine October 2019) outlined: elections → special status → border control. Even this compromise faced domestic backlash in Ukraine. Academic analysis confirms: "Ukraine's interpretation effectively made political implementation impossible, as Russia/Separatists would never agree to disarm and surrender border control without political guarantees first." Recognition came after 7+ years of Ukrainian non-compliance The 13 measures of Minsk II "remained largely unimplemented in the 7-year period between February 2015 and February 2022. By this time, only a few of the agreement's articles had been partially implemented, whereas most of them remained wholly unimplemented." Russia's Duma passed resolution urging recognition on 15 February 2022; DPR/LPR leaders formally appealed to Putin on 21 February 2022. Ukraine's own actions had already demolished Minsk's economic framework On 15 March 2017, Ukraine's National Security and Defense Council authorized a full economic blockade of freight traffic on the demarcation line, stopping ALL goods including coal to/from DPR/LPR. This directly violated Minsk II Point 8 on "full resumption of socio-economic ties, including social transfers, such as pension, payments and other payments" and Point 4 on humanitarian assistance access. Ukraine's Deputy Head of Presidential Administration Kostiantyn Yeliseyev admitted the blockade "prevents European partners from imposing additional targeted sanctions on Russia" — revealing it was politically motivated, not security-driven. Ukraine had ALREADY agreed to those autonomy decisions in Minsk II Minsk II was signed by Ukraine voluntarily. Point 11 required constitutional reform with decentralization "including a reference to the specificities of certain areas in the Donetsk and Lugansk regions, agreed with the representatives of these areas." Ukraine's President Poroshenko himself stated the constitutional reform "does not provide for any special status for Donbas" — directly contradicting Minsk II obligations. Ukraine's 2018 "Reintegration Law" labeled the territories as "temporarily-occupied" and Russia as "aggressor" — legally nullifying the political framework Minsk required. The 2014 referendums demonstrated significant local opposition to Kyiv Donetsk: 89.07% approval, claimed turnout 74.87% Luhansk: 96.2% approval, claimed turnout 81.89% While these were not internationally recognized, they occurred in the context of: The post-Maidan government's revocation of Russian language regional status The Odessa massacre (2 May 2014) Kyiv's launch of the "Anti-Terrorist Operation" against eastern regions
You're weaponizing procedural failures to justify military conquest. Yes, Ukraine dragged on Minsk implementation—bad faith, measurable, documented. But procedural breach doesn't equal aggression justifying invasion. Russia armed separatists while claiming neutrality, then abandoned negotiations entirely when full recognition became politically useful in 2022. Those 2014 referendums happened under Russian military occupation with no international observers and zero credibility. Ukraine's sequencing demand wasn't unreasonable—you can't disarm before political guarantees. Russia had 7 years to compromise. Instead it chose war. Implementation failures don't retroactively justify unilateral conquest. Why does procedural disagreement only justify *Russian* force, never Ukrainian resistance?
Obviously Russia will do war, when ukraine couldnt give rights to russians in ukraine and have documented masscared them, obviously russia is going to protect them.
You just admitted Russia chose war as the solution, then called it "protection." That's the entire problem. If minorities need defending, there are UN mechanisms, international arbitration, humanitarian corridors. Russia bypassed all of them for military conquest. Protection doesn't require annexing territory or installing puppet governments. And your "documented massacres" claim conflates disputed incidents with systematic genocide—Amnesty and HRW documented violations by both sides, not one-sided Ukrainian atrocities. Russia's 2022 invasion killed 600,000+ people. That's not protection, that's obliteration. If Russia genuinely cared about Russian minorities, why does it conscript Ukrainian men and deport civilians? Real protection doesn't look like this.
You are so delusional, Ukraine has OSCE, UN, Minsk, everything in front of them ,and it bypassed all of them and did not give a single right that was labbeled in the minsk to the russian minorities. You took away language rights from them. You shelled over them for 8 years. And yet you have the brass neck to come here and say that it was all russias fault and ukraine is always the victim. You used Minsk as a show to gain weapons from Nato and the US. You are standing here and telling that russia killed 600000 people when you kept the ukrainian army in hospitals, schools and residential towns leading to collateral damage. You appointed Azov regiment to go to donbas and luhansk and systematically exterminated the minorities , sexually abuse and rape them.
You're projecting Ukrainian identity onto me—I'm not Ukraine. But your logic fails: if Ukraine's Minsk violations justified invasion, Russia's 7-year silence on war means it accepted the status quo. Russia didn't invade to enforce Minsk; it invaded to annex territory and eliminate Ukrainian statehood. The casualty figures come from verified sources, not Ukrainian claims. Your "collateral damage" excuse collapses when Russia deliberately targets civilians with cluster munitions and thermobaric weapons in open areas. Azov abuses are documented and wrong, but war crimes by one military don't justify genocidal invasion by another. You're stacking atrocities to manufacture moral equivalence. It doesn't work. Why does Ukraine's wrongdoing only excuse Russian conquest, never resistance?
