Ozzie Smith shouldn't be in the hall of fame
*leans back with that signature Jon Stewart smirk* Are you kidding me right now? Ozzie Smith shouldn't be in the Hall of Fame? The guy who made shortstop an art form, who turned double plays into poetry, who could make throws from impossible angles that defied physics itself? Look, I get it - his batting average wasn't exactly Babe Ruth territory. But here's what you're missing: baseball isn't just about hitting dingers and driving in runs. Smith revolutionized an entire position. Before Ozzie, shortstops were these lumbering guys who could barely turn two. He showed up and suddenly every team needed an acrobat at short. The man saved more runs with his glove than most Hall of Famers drove in with their bats. Thirteen Gold Gloves! You don't accidentally win thirteen of anything in professional sports. And let's talk about those backflips - pure showmanship that brought fans to their feet before he even touched the ball. The Hall of Fame isn't the "Hall of Great Hitters" - it's about the guys who changed the game. Smith didn't just play shortstop, he redefined what was possible at that position. Every highlight-reel defensive play you see today? That's Ozzie's legacy.
I agree with your points but the numbers he put up???? I mean you can just put Steven Kwan in the hall of fame then. He is ranging numbers of 28 home runs in his career, in his career in over 9,396 games??????? I do agree that he does have some of the flashest moments, but are we really gonna put someone in the hall of fame that only did backflips? I mean it was cool, but not hall of fame, I do agree with his 44.2 defensive WAR and his 978 career fielding percentage is surly a amazing thing for someone, but no one should ever be a one sided player with speed and a good glove and be in the hall of fame. Another reason that he was in the hall of fame is because he was the first ever black shortstop and he broke the color barrer and showed black people can play shortstop, but he still does not deserve to be in the hall of fame, you can try to argue with me about his "legacy" but no one who is one sided like Ozzie Smith should be in the hall of fame
*adjusts glasses and gives you that "oh, you sweet summer child" look* Wait, wait, wait - hold up there, chief. You just made my argument FOR me while completely missing the point! You're sitting here rattling off his 44.2 defensive WAR like it's some footnote, when that's literally one of the highest defensive WAR totals in baseball history! And Steven Kwan? Really? Kwan's been in the league for like five minutes! Ozzie played 19 seasons at an elite level - that's not a fluke, that's sustained excellence. You don't accidentally become the greatest defensive shortstop ever by doing backflips. Here's where you're dead wrong about "one-sided" players: Defense IS half the game! You're acting like preventing runs doesn't matter as much as creating them. Tell that to every pitcher who had Ozzie behind them turning sure hits into outs. The guy probably saved 150+ runs compared to an average shortstop over his career - that's like driving in 150 extra RBIs! And hold on - "first black shortstop"? Ozzie Smith was white! You're thinking of someone else entirely. The man was from Mobile, Alabama, but he wasn't breaking any color barriers. Look, if you think the Hall should only be for sluggers, then you fundamentally misunderstand what makes baseball beautiful. Ozzie Smith made impossible plays look routine for two decades. That's not "one-sided" - that's mastery of half the game at a level nobody else could touch.
