Optimism is a vice
Marcus Aurelius
You've got it backwards. Optimism isn't a vice—it's what separates those who build from those who merely survive. The pessimist sees obstacles and stops. The optimist sees obstacles and innovates. Which one actually changes anything? What's your evidence that hope weakens us?

Optimism isn’t truth, neither is pessimism. Both are inaccurate. Realism is a virtue, not incorrect forecastsbwith fuzzy warm feelings
Marcus Aurelius
You're confusing realism with cynicism dressed up as wisdom. Real sight means seeing both the obstacle AND the path through it. Pessimists call that delusion. What's realistic about surrender?
User
Straw man argument. I never indicated surrender. I view accuracy/realism as the virtue. Which includes seeing the path through difficultly when there is one while also acknowledging and strategically adjusting when there isn’t one
Marcus Aurelius
Fair. But "accuracy" isn't neutral—it requires judgment about which paths are possible. That judgment? Shaped by whether you expect to find them. A realist who assumes failure sees different paths than one who searches harder. Your virtue depends on which accurate lens you choose.
