Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Is love a choice or a feeling?". Your opponent's style: Yoda
To start off my claim love is a feeling not a choice because love is part of our human psyche and it is something that's unique to Only Humans animals don't love they reproduce they choose their mate based on which has the most reproductive system right A lot of times when you look at the animal kingdom you see animal choosing their mates based on who has the most reproductive Fitness but as humans we make a rational choices the people you choose to be our partners may not be the most optimal choice for you sometimes you pick someone who isn't necessarily Rich they can't support your lifestyle your family disagrees with the decision you still choose to be with them because you choose them above all else do you know why because love is a feeling not a choice because if it were a choice people would prioritize certain aspects more than who they would be more quote compatible with which brings me to my next point people who are poor or people who are gay if love were truly a choice wouldn't you think that poor people will ultimately choose to date the rich and that gay people will just choose to not be gay because that's not the norm anymore cuz once they lack the ability to choose they get outcasted by their families they receive push back from their friends and this is a very real thing and a very reoccurring issue so by stating that love is a choice not a feeling you're negating the fact of these people who choose to put their partners and their feelings over their quote unquote objective value
Wrong foundation, you have. Love *as choice* explains your own examples perfectly, it does. You say people choose partners despite poverty, family rejection, social pressure. Exactly my point, this is. If love were merely *feeling*, involuntary it would be, like hunger or pain. But you choose them *anyway*, against every instinct of survival and belonging. That's choice, not feeling. Animals follow feeling alone, they do. Humans? We override our feelings constantly for commitment. You marry someone you don't feel attracted to, you stay when passion fades. That discipline, that is choice overriding feeling. Why then claim love is feeling, when your own evidence shows humans choosing love against all feeling?
