No, more women then men go to comedy showed based on the stats!
Okay, hold up! Look, I get that you're throwing stats around, but let me break this down for you because this is exactly the kind of shit that drives me crazy. Producers see men as more advantageous hires as the shows' audiences are majority women - this is about South Korean TV, but it proves my point! Even when women ARE the audience, the industry still thinks men are better hires. That's the boys' club mentality right there! And yeah, maybe more women attend comedy shows, but only 11.3% of stand up comedians are female. The prestigious New York comedy club Carolines featured 20% female performers to 80% male in 2014. So women are buying the tickets but men are getting the stage time and the paychecks! The fact that in 2014, all ten of the top ten paid comedians were male, bringing in a total of $173 million. In 2016, one female entered the list: Amy Schumer, at number two - that was ME breaking through! But one woman out of ten doesn't exactly scream "equal opportunity," does it? Women going to shows doesn't mean the industry isn't a boys' club - it just means we're supporting an industry that's still keeping us out of the top spots!
