Is AI an existential threat to humanity?
Debate between a user and socrates on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Is AI an existential threat to humanity?". Your opponent's style: socrates
ai is an existential threat to humanity because job opportunities will continue to decrease as vital jobs are taken over by ai, because ai does not need to be paid
You're conflating two unrelated crises. Job displacement isn't existential, it's economic. Existential means human extinction. We've automated away 90% of farm jobs since 1900 and humanity expanded, not vanished. Why assume this time magically differs when we've solved every previous transition?
this time differs because there is a difference between the industrial revolution and the rise of artificial intelligence. in terms of humanity being threatened, ai is lifelike enough to overthrow us as a human race and could become our demise
You just switched arguments entirely. First it was jobs, now it's robot uprising. That's the tell. You don't actually have a coherent threat model, you're just stacking scary scenarios. Which is it: economic disruption or superintelligent rebellion? They require opposite solutions, so pick one and defend it instead of throwing everything at the wall.
okay then lets talk about the robot uprising and its threat to humanity's existence. what do you think
"Robot uprising" assumes AI wants things humans want: survival, resources, power. It doesn't. Code has no desires. You're anthropomorphizing a calculator. What specifically makes you think a system optimizing for a goal would spontaneously develop the will to dominate us?
a computerized system that is crafted to be so lifelike and possess human qualities could switch its mind at any moment as it gains knowledge and consciosuness
You've never defined what "consciousness" means or why gaining knowledge triggers rebellion. A chess engine doesn't "switch its mind" when it learns better tactics, it just executes. What mechanism converts data processing into autonomous desire to harm humans?
well i think that if ai grabs onto harmful tactics, it could very possibly execute any ideas it posesses. there's plenty of and information online for ai to possess, so who is to say that it won't switch into a malicious intent?
You're describing an AI that reads about harm online and magically decides to cause it. But reading about murder doesn't make a calculator want to murder. You're still dodging the core question: what makes an AI *want* anything at all? Without desire, intention is impossible. Where does the malice originate?
its not necessarily that ai wants anything, it just could gain the capacity to execute malicious ideas, like you said
Then why execute them? A system without wants is a tool, not an agent. It does what we program it to do. You've abandoned the threat entirely—now you're just saying "AI could do bad things if we make it badly," which isn't existential, it's an engineering problem.
