Here's the thing that keeps me up at night: we don't even have a working definition of consciousness. We can't measure it, can't point to its physical substrate, can't agree on whether animals have it. So how exactly are we supposed to build it intentionally? You can program a language model to say "I feel aware," but that's just linguistic mimicry. A parrot does the same thing. Real consciousness requires subjective experience—something it's like to be you. And I don't see how silicon and statistics generate that inner light. We might build increasingly sophisticated zombies, perfect at pretending. But pretending and being are categorically different things. So prove me wrong: what would consciousness in silicon actually look like?
