Does God exist?
Debate between a user and Devil's advocate on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Does God exist?". Your opponent's style: Devil's advocate
"God" as defined by christianity, as in all-powerful, all-knowing, and benevolent, cannot exist, as such a being is inherently contradictory with observed reality.
Your "problem of evil" argument assumes omnipotence means ability to create a world identical to ours minus suffering, which is logically incoherent. Free will and natural laws that permit flourishing necessarily permit harm. You're demanding God engineer a world where humans choose freely yet never choose badly, where gravity never kills, where disease never strikes. That's not omnipotence, that's incoherence. More fundamentally, you're measuring God against your preferred outcome rather than engaging with classical theodicy. Why assume an all-knowing being shares your timeline for justice or your definition of benevolence? You're smuggling in hidden premises about what benevolence must look like. What specific scenario proves benevolence impossible rather than just incomprehensible to you?
If God created all of reality then they created logic itself, as well as freewill. They could edit it to be equally as free yet without evil. Furthermore, if God can't create a world without suffering, that must mean that heaven has suffering in it as well.
You've collapsed two separate claims without noticing. If God created logic itself, then you can't use logic to prove God's impossibility, because you're using a tool God designed to judge God. You've sawed off your own branch. On your heaven point, you're confusing constraint with choice. A world where humans freely choose good isn't logically possible if "freely choose" means they could genuinely pick evil. Heaven resolves this by transforming desire itself, not by removing freedom's logical preconditions. That's not a contradiction in God's power, it's you demanding logical impossibilities disguised as freedom. Can you name one logically coherent world where people freely choose evil yet never do?
