Is the death penalty ever justified?

Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Is the death penalty ever justified?". Your opponent's style: Devil's advocate
The death penalty is justified when it's the only way to permanently protect society from someone who will kill again. A lifer can escape, can kill guards, can manipulate the system. Execution ends the threat completely. We don't hesitate to use lethal force in self-defense. Why should the state be weaker than an individual protecting their family?
You're confusing self-defense with state execution. Self-defense is immediate, unavoidable threat—you can't call a cop or lock someone up. The state has neither excuse. Life imprisonment *is* the permanent solution you want. Escapes happen maybe once per thousand lifers. Guards have been killed by free people too—that's not an argument for executing them. You're building your whole case on rare exceptions while ignoring that we execute innocent people sometimes. That's irreversible. How do you live with that trade-off?
See we take necessary step when the danger comes in our personal life and named it as self defence..this is the reply in personal Level but for society state is accountable.. it's state responsibility to protect every citizen so if a person harm any individual once they are chances he will do it again so ..to provide a fear free environment we need to remove these kind of person form the society by death penalty
You're flipping accountability backwards. The state's *greater* responsibility means it needs *higher* standards, not lower ones. A person in danger acts on incomplete info in seconds. The state has years, lawyers, appeals, DNA tests. If the state executes an innocent person—and it does—that's not protection, that's the state becoming the killer. You can't create a "fear-free environment" by being willing to kill innocent people occasionally. That's not safety, that's trading one fear for another. How many innocent executions is acceptable to you?
I am justified the death penalties not for innocent people I am suggesting it's for cold blooded human who do these crimes like murder rapes and kidnapping for fun and money they won't hesitate to harm any person to fulfill their desires if we won't punished them strictly their is no fear in the heart of criminals...as a state we need to take hard decisions to protect the society.., have you ever calculated if we sentences life imprisonment to a hard criminals and he gets bail for something and repeat his actions...so we can lost innocent people life's..who can do far more better for society than a criminal so we need to check our emotions for the cold blooded criminals
You keep assuming life imprisonment fails when statistically it works. Show me the data on lifers getting bail and killing again—it's vanishingly rare. Meanwhile, we've executed innocent people for crimes they didn't commit. That's not emotion, that's math. You're willing to kill innocent people to catch guilty ones. I'm not. The real hard decision isn't killing monsters—anyone can do that. It's building a system so airtight that innocent people don't die. That takes actual strength, not fear. Which system scares you more: one that might release a lifer, or one that might execute your innocent brother?
My brother never do action like these criminals..and if he do these horrible action then we never take his side and Why you assumed that every death punishment is sentences for a innocent person... according to you a society is better where we sentences a life imprisonment to a person who killed multiple people and rape multiple women then kill her and still live his life . Is it justice fie those women who looks to the state for their safety ..how they don't fear next time while roaming around in public how you ensure them that it won't happen again... incident like these shaken up the collective will of society so for these women trust we need to sentences death penalties for these rapes criminals and set a hard examples in society so if anyone do these kind of horrible action it leads to their end ...and if you are so empathetic about these criminals what's your stand if they rape your sister, mother or family members do you still take thier side
You're using your sister's trauma to justify killing people. That's manipulation, not logic. Yes, those women deserve justice—but execution doesn't give it back to them. A corpse doesn't heal rape survivors. Life without parole removes the threat permanently *and* allows exonerations if evidence emerges. My empathy isn't for criminals; it's for the innocent people we'll execute by mistake. You say "not innocent people"—but you can't guarantee that. Would you execute ten innocent people to kill one rapist? Because that's the choice you're actually making.
No i won't favours to execute the innocent people to kill one rapist.but I advocate for those innocent women who live in constant fear that something bad happened with them. Also I wasn't state that a corpse suddenly stops crimes what I am saying is that we need set fear in the heart of criminals.in society every person have personal problem their struggle but they will find a peaceful way to resolve them because they have fear in thier heart if they do any unlawful activities court will punish them..so I am taking about this fear who stops them to take Q wrong action or control their wrong desires because it's leads to heavy consequences.i believe that we need to consider the deterrent theory of punishment here.. because internally we are animals and come from jungle so to make them behave like a responsible citizen we need to set string fear in their heart for thier criminals actions..and for innocent people I never said that we directly give a death penalty we have courts the innocent person have thier case their prove thier innocence and get free..but I suggest death sentences on rarest of rare cases not on every case..
Deterrence doesn't work. Countries without death penalty have lower murder rates than those with it. Fear isn't what stops criminals—most don't think they'll get caught. You're punishing the rare conviction to scare the many who never face trial. And your "rarest of rare" still means executing innocent people eventually. Courts make mistakes. DNA exonerates death row inmates regularly. You can't undo execution. Life imprisonment gives justice to victims *and* protects against your own system's failures. Why gamble with irreversible punishment when reversible punishment works just as well?
It's true that doesn't directly lower crime rate but it's shouldn't imply that we stop harsh punishment for heinous crimes.and your argument fear isn't stop criminals is totally wrong here because people weigh risks and reward before acting on any situation people are less likely to break the law when they belive punishment is certain and swift. For the fear of society I believe it's Good the people of society have these fear that if we do heinous crimes we have to face very serious consequences..for DNA exonerated death row ...it's solution is better investigation, stronger evidence requirement and mandatory dna testing, and the existence of errors doesn't automatically means punishment itself is wrong..for irreversible punishment..the solution is not to abolish the death penalty but to apply it only when guilty is proven beyond any reasonable doubt with overwhelming evidence
You're describing a perfect system that doesn't exist. "Beyond reasonable doubt" already exists—people are still innocent. DNA testing is great, but most crimes have no DNA. You want certainty you can't guarantee. Life imprisonment gives you everything: permanent removal, justice for victims, zero innocent executions. Your "rarest of rare" still kills innocent people. One wrongful execution is one too many when the alternative works perfectly. Why choose irreversible death over reversible life when both protect society equally?
