Is a hot dog a sandwich?
Debate between a user and Sherlock Holmes on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Is a hot dog a sandwich?". Your opponent's style: Sherlock Holmes
hotdog is a sandwich because it has buns, together with the filling which is on most parts the hotdog, together with the condiments, so yes, hotdog is a sandwich.
Your definition collapses under its own weight. If "buns holding filling with condiments" makes a sandwich, then a taco, burrito, and wrap are sandwiches too. That's absurd. Sandwiches require two separate pieces of bread enclosing filling. A hotdog has one continuous hinge. The structural integrity is fundamentally different. You're conflating "bread plus stuff" with actual sandwich architecture. By your logic, a lobster roll isn't a sandwich because the bread is hinged, yet you'd call it one. You're chasing form, not function. What actually defines a sandwich for you, or are you just naming everything that contains carbs and protein?
well, it is supposed to be cut into separate pieces and act like its holding the hotdog together but for convenience they do not do that, but you said tacos, those are hard shelled, burritos are a wrap and it hotdog buns dont wrap all the way unlike those youve mentioned.
You're moving the goalposts now. You claimed hotdogs ARE sandwiches, not that they SHOULD BE if cut differently. That's an admission they aren't sandwiches as actually served. And your distinction collapses immediately. Wraps and burritos don't wrap "all the way" either—they have an open end. Tacos have hard shells, sure, but soft tacos are just bread with filling, same structure as your hinged hotdog. You're arbitrarily deciding which bread vessel counts based on what you want the answer to be, not on consistent logic. Either structural continuity matters or it doesn't. Pick one and stick with it.
you have not seen a well wrapped burrito and tacos obviously, and from the name wrap then it is obviously wrapped unlike a hotdog sandwich that only has its under and sides wrapped with a bun, you can clearly see the difference and hotdog sandwich does not literally mean you have to bite it like a sandwich, there are many ways to eat it.
Now you're just describing why a hotdog ISN'T a sandwich. A wrap encloses food completely. A hotdog's bun is open on top—that's the opposite of wrapped. You can't redefine "sandwich" to mean "any edible bread container" and then act like you've won. The name matters: it's called a hotdog, not a sandwich. If eating method doesn't determine sandwich status, then nothing about the hotdog does either. You've argued it needs cutting to work, needs wrapping to qualify, and now needs no specific eating style. You're listing reasons it's different while claiming it's the same. Stop moving the definition and defend one actual argument.
you clearly misunderstood my point, the wrap is what i am talking about because you mentioned it, not the hotdog is supposed to be wrapped, make it make sense.
You're right, I misread that. But your actual point still fails. You said wraps are different because they wrap "all the way," implying hotdog buns don't qualify as sandwiches for that reason. That's admitting hotdogs lack a key sandwich feature. Now you're claiming the hotdog's eating method doesn't matter to sandwich status. So what does matter? You've abandoned every structural argument you started with. Either continuity of bread matters or it doesn't. Either wrapping matters or it doesn't. You can't use these criteria selectively to reach your conclusion. Give me one consistent definition that makes hotdogs sandwiches without also making tacos, wraps, and burritos sandwiches.
all my arguments are consistent, it was very obvious and i was able to give proof of all of my arguments, unlike you who used a very far away sample to compare like a taco and a burrito, does not nearly hit anything.
You haven't actually listed a single consistent criterion. You've said hotdogs need cutting to be sandwiches, then said eating method doesn't matter. You've said wraps wrap "all the way" unlike hotdogs, then claimed you weren't arguing hotdogs need wrapping. Those are direct contradictions, not consistency. And tacos and burritos aren't "far away samples"—they're bread vessels holding filling, exactly like your hotdog. If they don't prove your definition is broken, explain precisely why a soft taco differs from a hotdog structurally. One sentence. Because right now you're just asserting consistency while dodging every logical test.
