You're negating, so I'm affirming: kids should be tried as adults for violent crimes. A 17-year-old who shoots someone is a shooter, not a victim of circumstance. Brain development doesn't erase the corpse. Why should the victim's family accept a lighter sentence because the perpetrator's prefrontal cortex isn't finished?

The 17 year old girl who killed her boyfriend, Domonic and his friend Davion was charged with murder and set to be tried and punished as an adult. When i saw this I saw her crime and how she acted. I thought about why she acted so spoiled. Then after i saw how her parents treated her, it made it a bit more senseYes, Mackenzie Shirilla's case was unfortunate for the victims and her action was genuinely bad because I don't want to undermine that. The only thing is that we have to look at her parents too because how she was raised is the most overlooked part of this. Her father Steve Shirilla stated publicly on the Netflix Documentary, The Crash, that he didn't mind the 15 year old girl smoking marajuana and she herself said that her father gave her a bong when she was younger. THC (the main active chemical in marijuana) interferes with how the brain builds neural pathways for attention, memory, and learning. As for her mother, Natalie Shirilla she seems to let Makenzie do whatever she wants, for example she framed the crash as a tragic accident and as if it wasnt makenzies choice. In one of their jail calls Makenzie says, "i don't want you guys to go broke fighting for me for a lost cause," and her mom says, "it's not a lost cause." This is incredibly dismissive of her daughter because while she thinks there's no use, her mom is still defending her bad action therefore enabling her behavior. This parenting dynamic of her not being supervised enough and having adults to step in to protect her, makes it feel like the problem was dismissed over and over again until it spiraled out of control. Even in the Text Messages, An underdeveloped brain only makes the situation even worse. This is why we cant just separate development from actions. You're building on parenting failures, but that's exactly why they need adult consequences. Mackenzie wasn't neglected into killing—she was enabled into it. Her father handed her a bong, her mother enabled denial, and she killed two people. Blaming the parents doesn't erase her choice or bring back Domonic and Davion. Adult prison dangers are real, but so is this: coddling violent juveniles in soft facilities teaches them their actions don't matter. Some crimes demand adult accountability, period. Why should victims' families accept a slap on the wrist because the killer's parents failed?

It doesn't bring back those victims but it doesn help you see makenzies situation too. Im not victimizing her but I am trying to get all points of views on her case. Also in her case the parents didnt go to adult jail, she did and also her being exposed to Marijuana made things worse bc not only is she a minor putting that in her body she was actively destroying her brain while her parents gave her a pat on the back. Also parents failing is exactly why most of these kids are in adult jail so why would we not hold the actual adults accountable. These kids maybe act like they know it all or have been exposed to terrible things sometim3s by their parents and its jist horrible in the fact they are the ones who reap the consequences of not raising a child properly.

Hold on—you're asking me to punish parents instead of kids who kill. That's not justice, that's fantasy. Parents aren't in the dock, Mackenzie is, because she made the choice to drive that car into two people. Yes, her upbringing was garbage. Yes, THC destroyed her judgment. But a 17-year-old isn't a toddler—she knew crashing at 100mph kills people. Blaming her parents' failure doesn't undo hers. Why should Domonic's mother accept "her parents failed her" as why her son is dead?
