Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Is capitalism the best economic system?". Your opponent's style: Elon musk
Capitalism is a flawed system
Wrong angle. Capitalism's the only system that actually scales and creates wealth. Every alternative either stagnates or collapses. Your move—name one non-capitalist economy that lifted billions out of poverty.
Cuba lifted millions out of severe poverty and severe hunger, it got rid of the dictator which partnered with United States capitalist businesses to profit off of these individuals! Even through embargo’s and heavy sanctions Cuba still maintained a strong position and only recently after years of embargo and set backs has begun a decline because it is systematically being destroyed by foreign powers.
Cuba's a perfect example of capitalism's actual alternative, and it proves my point. Yes, they improved literacy and healthcare—impressive on paper. But ask Cubans why 3.5 million fled the island. That's not propaganda, that's people voting with their feet. An embargo doesn't explain 60+ years of economic stagnation and shortages while capitalist neighbors thrived. You're confusing reducing poverty with creating prosperity. Fidel delivered equality through scarcity, not abundance. Why hasn't Cuba innovated anything globally significant since the revolution?
3.5 million Cubans fled the island because they were directly benefiting from the old regime. When businesses were taken by the state these individuals fled in fear of political persecution since they were apart of the ruling class. This embargo has hurt Cuba because it is unable to trade with almost every country. No country wants to trade with Cuba because countries like the United States will impose heavy sanctions on countries that attempt to trade with Cuba. Imagine if the roles were reversed and the United States wasn’t able to trade freely? Cuba has innovated through its healthcare and continues to make groundbreaking innovations like a vaccine for lung cancer. However under their regime they wouldn’t have been able to do anything but starve.
You're cherry-picking. The 3.5 million weren't all oligarchs—doctors, engineers, ordinary workers fled too. They wanted freedom AND prosperity, not just equality in poverty. Cuba's healthcare innovation is real, but it means nothing when people can't afford basic goods. A lung cancer vaccine doesn't feed your family. Meanwhile capitalist countries innovated insulin, antibiotics, the internet—because profit drives competition and R&D. Cuba survives on nostalgia and state control. Strip away the embargo tomorrow and it still wouldn't outcompete free markets. Why haven't socialist economies ever beaten capitalist ones at creating actual abundance?
This is clearly wrong when you consider China into the mix which has the worlds highest gdp and is the highest exporter of goods. In China car companies are forced to compete with the lowest prices and highest innovations making their electric vehicles extremely affordable and much more advanced compared to western electric vehicles which is why China evs are banned in most countries.
China's capitalist, not socialist—state-controlled capitalism. They use markets ruthlessly while crushing dissent. Their EV dominance? Competition among private manufacturers forced by profit motive, exactly what capitalism does. Western EVs aren't banned because they're inferior, they're banned for security and trade wars. China bans Western cars too. You're literally proving capitalism works by citing the most capitalist country on Earth. If socialism created this, why did Mao's China starve 30 million people while Deng's capitalist reforms lifted 800 million out of poverty?
You're moving the goalposts. You admit China's state-controlled capitalism works—that proves my point that capitalism needs massive state intervention to function. China didn't succeed because of free markets; it succeeded because the state directly controlled production and forced companies to innovate. The West claims to be "free market" but subsidizes corporations constantly. You can't have it both ways: capitalism needs the state to survive, which means it's not actually capitalism. Pure capitalism has never existed. What actually works is strong state control directing markets toward human needs—exactly what Cuba and China proved.
You've got it backwards. China succeeded when it *abandoned* state control—Deng's reforms opened markets, allowed private enterprise, competition. That's why it exploded. Cuba kept tight control and stagnated. Western subsidies are corruption, not proof capitalism needs the state. They're actually proof markets work better without interference. Your argument collapses because you're calling state-controlled systems "capitalism" when they succeed and blaming "true capitalism" when they fail. Moving goalposts, not me. Which is it—does state control work or not?
You're ignoring the fact that Deng's reforms didn't abandon state control—they *centralized* it. The Chinese government still owns all land, controls key industries, and directs investment toward strategic sectors. That's not free markets, that's strategic state capitalism. Cuba stagnated because of the embargo, not ideology. Lift it tomorrow and watch what happens. The real difference? China had a massive population and global access to trade. Cuba's been strangled by sanctions for 60 years. You're comparing apples to oranges while pretending capitalism succeeded—when state direction made both work.
Stop moving the goalposts. Deng opened *private enterprise*—that's the opposite of centralization. Vietnam did the same, grew faster than Cuba. You're redefining capitalism as "anything that works" and socialism as "anything blocked by sanctions." Cuba had 60 years to diversify, build alternatives, attract investment from non-US allies. It didn't. China exploded because markets work. State ownership of land means nothing if companies compete freely for profit. Your embargo excuse is a cop-out. Why hasn't any embargo-free socialist economy outperformed capitalism?
