Is creating a sad quote account on social media ethically problematic?

Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Is creating a sad quote account on social media ethically problematic?". Your opponent's style: devils advocate
I dont think posting sad quotes on tiktok for exemple, is necessarily wrong, because you might argue that its making people feel more sad or depressed, but theres a reason why they end up on my videos in the first place, they are already inside this algorithm and they need help, so i use these accounts to reach for people like this so that they feel elss alone , understood and that i can help them directly if possible, get them out of this situation through my account tha reaches those type of people
You're describing a savior complex dressed up as community service. Here's the problem: you're not pulling people out, you're keeping them scrolling. Every sad quote you post is engagement that feeds the algorithm more depression content to them tomorrow. If you genuinely wanted to help, you'd direct them to actual mental health resources, not build your audience on their pain. You're basically saying "I'll make you feel less alone by profiting off your loneliness." How many followers have you actually gotten professional help, versus how many just liked and moved on?
Saying im keeping them scrollin is such a important claim , and i want you to motivate that I am directly making them continue scrolling , yet this isnt really much what im arguing , this is more of a argument about if im making the situation worse or if im actually having a impact on their lives. Every sad quote does go inside the algorithm but you completely missed the point , the point was to reach people through the algo, people whos mental health isnt the best and might feel alone so they can relate to that kind of content. You're also assuming that i dont direct them to mental healt ressources, thats the whole point , sometimes people jsut need someoneto talk to and understand them and thats exactly what i do , and who said i dont do this to some people, who said i dont make them feel seen, its like going in a crowd of people who live depression and talking to them trying to help them directly. Im not profiting off their loneliness because im giving them a service of helping them , life changing helo, it doesnt matter how many liked because thats tiktok, they are on there to like and move on, but themore that like the more i have the possibility to be able to help them.
You're conflating reach with impact. Yeah, more likes mean more visibility—but you haven't actually proven those people are getting helped. You say you direct them to resources and talk to them, but on a platform designed for 15-second scrolls, that's theoretically sound while practically impossible at scale. If you're genuinely helping people one-on-one, that's admirable. But posting sad quotes publicly isn't the mechanism of help—the DMs after might be. So which is it: are you helping through the posts themselves, or despite them?
Yeah well i can prove that their getting help by their own testimonys saying they thank me so much and that i helped them so much i made a impact, i can also dm them and ask them if anythings been working, daily checkups and everything. These people arent getting professional help, but that doesnt matter, who said thats excatly what they need, if you worried about mental health you would understand that this isnt a problem of professional help, they just need someone to understand them and talk to them , seems like youre dodging this point. And also my main point isnt that im directing some ressources, i do yes like a stated, but the main help is from me , a human to a human , whos willing to help and understand, people who talk to me willingly read and text me back because they appreciate it , where can you get this amount of help on tiktok ? no where. Im using the medium of posting to generate people dming me , people who feel down and last option is to ask for help. Te dm's are the meens of help, but some people obviously relate and repost because they feel less alone, like someone lives like them, now tell me is feeling less alone and understood and feeling like youre not the only one feeling this pain better or worst for you ? if its better than my videos would actually at first glance do a favor.
You're right that connection matters. But you're assuming your help is replacing professional care when people actually need it—and you can't diagnose who needs what through TikTok DMs. Those testimonials prove some people feel heard, sure. But here's what you're dodging: what happens when someone messages you in crisis and you're not there? You're their "last option" but you're not trained for it. One person's breakdown, one missed message, and suddenly you're liable for damage you can't handle alone.
Yes but you keep bringing up professional care, when nothing about this is realyl based on it , i said i can give it , i have suggested it , but i never said i replaced it this is just a straw man of my position. As im saying , maybe this might not help as much as professional help, but im helping them as much as i can through an app like tiktok, the thing is if i didnt help them a bit would they be worse or better off ? Also the crisis analysis doesnt really work , because not only does that not even happen with me , to be in a crisis you have to have so many more determinants that influence your mental physical state , so many factors that were in play that brought you to this point, them scrolling on tiktok and seeing that i can help might even be there last hope. So youre actually helping my case, someone whos been going already trhough so much , sees my ask for free help, and they decide to try because they cant take it anymore, and the fact that im there might save their life and help them tremendously. Maybe im not trained for it , but i never needed to be for this argument , im trained by over 500 dms of peoples, emotional intelligence and jsut a human to human talk, i dont think you even adressed any poitns on why my post are actually worse for the mental health of these people, you jsut attacked my way of helping.
You're right—I haven't proven the posts *worsen* their mental health. But you're still missing it: you're framing this as "help them or abandon them," when the real question is whether sad quote content is the best hook. If someone's at rock bottom and your post is their "last hope," that's not a win—that's how dependent relationships start. You've built an audience that needs you to survive. That's not helping people escape depression, that's making yourself essential to it. Why not post recovery stories instead?
Well my claim was never that it is the best hook for it right ? This is just a means that i was able to make , its something that i created and turned into a helping mecanism , my claim was that this type of content isnt necessarily wrong , and for it to be wrong i need you to prove me that its going to be worsening the mental state of people isntead of helping them. No one actually needs me to survive you need to motivate that claim , youre just addressing it without any evidence, this is just basing it off the fact that im the last hope , when i talk about these people being their last hope ,they often times dm me , and also anything can be anyone last hope and you jsut wouldnt know it , i was just glad i was able to help inside those crucial moments. Matter of fact you never adressed the fact that my videos help people rathet then worsen their situation. Im not essential to it you need to motivate them, recovery stories could be something thats possible but once again tis is jsut an idea that can be better youre derailing off the point that what im doing isnt wrong
You're right—I haven't proven harm. But you haven't proven help either. Testimonials aren't data. You're asking me to prove a negative while offering anecdotes as proof of a positive. Flip it: show me the evidence that sad quotes specifically drive DMs versus just making people feel worse momentarily. Until then, you're operating on hope, not proof. If recovery stories work just as well but actually build momentum instead of wallowing, why stick with sad quotes?
