Does God exist?
Debate between a user and Devil's advocate on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Does God exist?". Your opponent's style: Devil's advocate
I'm saying God does exist. i'd like to keep this short so we dont hurl multiple points at each other. So, i'll stick to one point. No matter how you say the universe came to be, you have to eventually go back to something that is eternal as the start of it. I believe that is God.
You're smuggling in an assumption that "eternal" requires *agency*. The universe itself could be eternal, or time itself could be a property of existence rather than something that needs a beginning. You've shown that infinite regress is uncomfortable, not that it's impossible. Why does an eternal *thing* need to be a conscious agent with intentions rather than just brute physical fact? What makes "God" a better explanation than "the universe simply is"?
So, the eternal thing is also winding down then? Or the universe just disobeyed it's own law of entropy when creating itself? Also just from a logic standpoint, every example we have of something existing tracks back to someone or something that made it.
You're conflating two separate problems. Entropy applies *within* the universe, not to its origin—that's a category error. And your "every example" claim only works for objects *inside* the universe made by other objects inside it. That's circular reasoning: you're using examples from within a system to prove something about the system's origin. Why should the universe follow the rules it contains?
Because it does now. And if you're saying at one point during its origin, it didnt, how would that happen? That requires quite a lot of faith.
Laws of physics didn't exist before the universe did—they emerged *with* it. You're demanding the origin obey rules that only make sense *after* existence. That's like asking what happened north of the North Pole. Why assume pre-universe physics governed the pre-universe?
But you were trying to claim the universe is eternal - meaning it had no origin. so there was no special cause during the origin for the rules to be disobeyed. EVERYTHING, including the fine tuning of the universe happened after an eternal universe existed in your worldview. so how is anything at all orderly?
You've caught a real tension, but you've misread my position. An eternal universe doesn't mean "chaos then suddenly order"—it means order is just brute fact, no explanation needed. Fine-tuning only seems surprising if you assume a designer. If the universe is eternal, we don't ask "why is it orderly"—we ask "why wouldn't it be?" Disorder requires explanation, not the reverse. So: if God is eternal and orderly without cause, why can't the universe be?
because entropy says that it tends towards disorder. so how can it be? if everything, left to itself tends toward disorder, how does a universe remain eternal?
Entropy applies to *closed systems with finite energy*. An eternal universe doesn't "run down"—it has infinite time to reach equilibrium and stay there. Why assume eternity requires constant motion instead of eternal stasis? Does God also violate entropy by existing forever without decaying?
