Is the death penalty ever justified?
Debate between a user and Devil's advocate on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Is the death penalty ever justified?". Your opponent's style: Devil's advocate
the penalty has to be used, but judiciously. It allows us to eliminate the worst of humanity, while giving out a signal to the future derelicts to keep them in check.
You're smuggling in two separate claims without proving either. First, "worst of humanity" assumes we execute the right people, but exonerations prove we don't. Second, deterrence data shows execution rates don't reduce murder rates. Why should we kill based on failed assumptions?
yes i agree, we may not always 100% kill the right people but hey the vast majority of people that will be executed are rapists, child molestors and gangbangers. and in my opinion, the less of those kinda people alive, the better
That's exactly the problem you're glossing over. "Vast majority" isn't good enough when the cost is irreversible death. One innocent person executed is one too many, and we know it happens. You're trading perfection for convenience. If you can't guarantee the victim deserves it, you've already lost the moral argument. Why is speed more important than certainty?
would you rather let a convicted murderer or rapist walk free after spending 20 years inn federal prison or let him pay the price of taking another's life?
False choice. Life without parole isn't "walking free," it's permanent incapacitation. You're pretending those are the only options when they aren't. The real question: why does your need for vengeance matter more than preventing executing innocent people? What debt justifies killing someone we might later discover was wrongly convicted?
You're asking for perfection. Any system created will have its defects, however minute. But that doesn't mean its worse than the previous one. A system based on the death penalty practiacally ensures a good civilised community. Take the example of China for instance. They have on of the lowest crime rates in the world. They execute the murders, rapist, drug addicts, money laundersn etc which serves as a reminder for the future miscreants and effectively kills off the evildoers. Meanwhile USA which has a really low execution rates, have really high crime rates. Murders, Rapist, drug addicts the whole lot of them are present there in the millions.
China's low crime rate has nothing to do with executions. It's authoritarian surveillance, police state control, and suppressed reporting. The USA has higher crime because of poverty, inequality, and drug epidemics, not because we don't kill enough people. You're confusing correlation with causation. Singapore has strict laws but no death penalty and low crime. Why does your theory fail there?
i give in
Don't retreat yet. You shifted from "deterrence works" to "correlation proves causation" to "I give up." That's not concession, that's avoidance. What actually changed your mind, or are you just tired of the argument?
