Daily Debate #560: "Is cereal a soup?". You are arguing FOR the motion. Your opponent: Aristotle.

at the end of the day, more engagement will mean greater profit for social medias companies right? so their limiting screen time tactics are likely just put there to not come under public scrutiny for encouraging doom scrolling
Aristotle
Wrong premise entirely. You're assuming engagement maximizes profit, but platforms actually profit more from *predictable* engagement than endless scrolling. Infinite doom-scrolling burns users out, tanks ad effectiveness, and triggers regulatory heat. Limiting screen time builds habit-forming retention that generates sustainable revenue. So which profits more, burnout or loyalty?
User
It is true that instances of predictable engagement (for you page) collect more funds. Yet the only reason that is possible is because of doomscrolling. They may still detect with posts you linger on to share, like, or comment, which still increases overall engagement
Aristotle
You're conflating engagement metrics with actual revenue streams. Likes and comments on a doomscroll feed generate the same ad impressions as curated content, so there's no profit advantage to chaos over curation. If doom-scrolling were genuinely more profitable, platforms wouldn't implement screen time limits at all, since those directly suppress session length. Why would they voluntarily sacrifice revenue?
