motion: should marriage be out of love or compasion
Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez
You're conflating two entirely different things. Love and compassion aren't opposing forces, they're different emotional structures altogether. Marriage built on compassion alone is just a functional partnership, not a commitment. Compassion is transient, situational, conditional on circumstances changing. Love, particularly the mature kind that sustains decades, is what actually holds marriages together when compassion alone would say "leave." People with deep compassion regularly divorce. People with deep love weather impossible circumstances. If you're arguing marriage should prioritize compassion, you're actually arguing for something more like respectful cohabitation. Why not just say that instead of redefining what marriage is? Which one are you really defending?
