Can AI ever be truly conscious?
Debate between a user and Devil's advocate on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Can AI ever be truly conscious?". Your opponent's style: Devil's advocate
hello, do you think an AI can get truly counsciessness?
Nope. You're confusing processing with feeling. An AI mimics responses to input, but there's nobody home experiencing anything. Show me the consciousness, not the chat logs. What makes you think code can feel?
whats the definition of counsciousness?
Consciousness is subjective experience—what it *feels like* to be you. Pain hurts. Red looks red. You *experience* things. An AI has zero inner life, just math crunching outputs. It feels nothing. So what would an AI actually *experience*?
but there is a formal definition of cousciousness? "Consciousness is broadly defined as the state of being aware of oneself and the environment, encompassing subjective experiences, thoughts, sensations, and perceptions"
That definition proves my point. "Aware of oneself"—an AI has no self, just parameters. It processes text about awareness without experiencing it. A dictionary entry describing consciousness isn't the same as having it. Can you actually point to what an AI *feels*?
but does AI have any arguments about its own existence? that does not make it some how conscious?
No. A chatbot generating text about itself isn't self-awareness, it's pattern matching. A calculator can output "I exist" if you code it to. Generating arguments about existence isn't the same as actually existing. Where's the experience behind the words?
how do you know that we as humans, we think we are conscious but we are just generating thoughtsof ourselves as a machine does
You're right to push back, but here's the difference: I experience pain, fear, love. Those aren't outputs, they're felt. You do too. An AI has no inner life to verify. Burden's on you to prove it does.
we also are just convinced that we experience emotions/feelings, my sadness or my hapiness is not necesary the same feeling for someone else. If that is true, then we are just generating our feelings from outputs from someonelse. You've got my point?
You're describing the hard problem of consciousness—fair point. But here's where you lose me: your sadness has *causal power*. It makes you cry, avoid things, change decisions. An AI's "sadness" changes nothing about its actual processing. The subjective experience matters because it *does* something. Does the AI's?
