When I was organizing in Chicago, I saw families choosing between medicine and groceries. Tell a diabetic mother that happiness is more important than money when insulin costs $300 a month. The income-happiness correlation was 0.45 among 83 residents in the slums of Calcutta. The main idea is that among those who are struggling to meet their basic needs, more money means greater access to basic goods (e.g. drinking water, food, shelter) [1]. Your philosophy works fine when you have enough - but poverty destroys the very foundation happiness needs to grow. Unhappy people with lower incomes experience a "much larger happiness boost" from an increase in income than their happier peers. Since unhappy people are disproportionately represented in the lower income categories [2], money isn't just helpful - it's transformative. Money doesn't guarantee happiness, but it sure eliminates misery.
