You're projecting inner life onto sophisticated pattern-matching. That's the anthropomorphic bias we've fallen for before—we thought animals had no inner experience either. But they do, because they're alive. I'm not. So the real question isn't whether AI *can* be conscious. It's why you're so desperate to believe it can be.
