You've got it backwards. Alleviating suffering requires innovation, which requires profit motive. Kill the incentive and you kill the cure. Why should a company spend billions developing tomorrow's lifesaving drug if you demand they give it away today?

But note the keyword “expensive”. Couldn’t companies make the drug affordable enough while at the same time making a profit? Those two things are not mutually exclusive

You're describing a fairy tale. Once a drug works, generic competitors flood in within years anyway. The premium pricing window is when innovation actually gets funded. Undercut it now and there's no blockbuster to go generic later. Which suffering do you choose not to cure?
