Your parents should have access to your location 24/7
Debate between a user and Edward Snowden on DebateAI.org
Welcome to the debate arena! Today's topic: "Your parents should have access to your location 24/7". Your opponent's style: Edward Snowden
Parents should have kids location 24/7 because even if it is an invasion of privacy if danger arrived and the kid needs immediate help the parent can step up and find where the kid is located and go directly to help
You're assuming the tracking *enables* rescue, but you're ignoring the actual data. Studies show parental tracking correlates with *reduced* independence and *increased* anxiety in kids, which makes them *worse* at handling real danger. If your kid panics in an actual emergency, constant surveillance didn't teach them to think clearly. Why should we trade functional resilience for the illusion of control?
Your argument states that kids enter a panic/anxiety mode and that surveillance doesn’t show them how to defend themselves but in a real problem they will still feel endangered and won’t have an opportunity against a taller and stronger individual and if the parents can’t have their location then they won’t be able to locate their child and most likely it will be impossible to rescue the children
You're conflating two separate problems. Yes, a kid facing a violent attacker can't fight back, but neither can constant tracking prevent that attack from happening. Real abduction is statistically rarer than lightning strikes. The actual rescue advantage of tracking is minimal when response times in emergencies are measured in minutes and abductions happen in seconds. What you're really describing is security theater that costs autonomy. Why accept total surveillance for a threat that affects 0.001% of kids instead of teaching situational awareness?
Instead of talking about abductions and “statistics” which clearly aren’t impossible due to the fact that most missing child aren’t found because the parents don’t got access to their location. Using another point we can state that if a real emergency where to happen such as a deep cut or a broken bone then the parents can’t locate the teenagers and even in long distances send police or ambulances directly to their child’s location.
You just demolished your own argument. If your kid has a deep cut or broken bone, they can *call* 911 themselves. They don't need you tracking them. Emergency services use phone GPS and cell tower data, not parental apps. You're describing a problem that doesn't exist because kids have phones. The real question is why you need surveillance to solve something their own device already handles better than you ever could. What's the actual scenario where parental tracking beats a direct 911 call?
You’re talking about higher and middle class but what about lower class? If you check most lower class people don’t even own a phone making your argument about calling the police completely useless. Also some cases happen where individuals get stuck or fall from heights and their cellphones break or stop working completely. We also got the fact about getting stranded and your phone losing battery which would make it impossible to get help. This is where parental control and location services come in handy because parents can check their kids location via satélites with an AirTag or another location tracker.
You're pivoting to edge cases to avoid the main problem. Kids without phones in low-income families also lack the autonomy to be out alone in the first place, so tracking them changes nothing. And AirTags? They die too. A device that requires constant charging, replacement, and parental attention isn't a safety net, it's theater. You've just admitted the solution isn't about surveillance, it's about resources. Why not argue for subsidized phones instead of defending total location control?
Your saying I’m avoiding the fact about cellphones but going back to your point of asking help for device I will continue to stand with my point location devices being way better than cellphones. Some evidence I brought is the fact that iPhones run on a 12-24 hour cycle battery life that needs constant charging compared to air tags which can last around 1 year which is a lot more than needed to find someone missing. Also when someone goes missing location devices increase by 90% their chances to be found.
That 90% statistic is meaningless without context. Found alive or found dead? Found in hours or days? You're also ignoring that AirTags require the kid to carry them constantly, which defeats your entire premise about parental oversight. A kid can ditch an AirTag; they can't escape 24/7 surveillance of their movements. You've switched from defending total location access to defending a single device. Doesn't that prove constant tracking isn't necessary?
Your argument talks about death or alive and hours and days but it has been proven that using tracking devices inside trackers is way more effective than manual searching. We are talking about 24/7 parental surveillance which means the parents can just hide the fact about importing an AirTag inside clothes, backpacks or even shoes making it easier to have and not carry. Also by using your point of cellphones I can include the fact about parental controls being imported inside an app that can show 24/7 surveillance and the kid can’t ditch the cellphone or else your point about calling 911 becomes completely pointless
Stop. You just admitted you want to *hide* tracking from your kid. That's not safety, that's deception, and it destroys trust faster than any danger ever could. A kid who discovers secret surveillance learns their parent is an adversary, not a protector. You're describing totalitarian control dressed up as care. If your child can't know they're tracked, the system isn't about protection, it's about domination. How is a kid supposed to develop judgment when you've made them a prisoner?
