Who is Simone de Beauvoir?
Simone de Beauvoir (1908-1986) was a French philosopher, novelist, and essayist, a central figure of existentialism and the intellectual foundation of modern feminism. Educated at the Sorbonne, she passed the elite agregation in philosophy at 21, among the youngest ever to do so, and spent her life at the center of postwar French intellectual culture alongside her lifelong intellectual partner Jean-Paul Sartre, though her philosophical work is fully her own and in places corrects his.
Her masterpiece, The Second Sex (1949), asked a question philosophy had never taken seriously: what is a woman? Her answer became the century's most consequential sentence about gender: one is not born, but rather becomes, a woman. Femininity, she argued, is not a biological essence but a situation constructed by society, myth, economics, and upbringing, and then presented as nature. Man is treated as the default human, the Subject; woman is defined relationally, as the Other. The book was scandalous on publication and went on to seed the feminist movements of the following decades.
Beneath the feminism is a rigorous existentialist ethics, worked out in The Ethics of Ambiguity. Humans have no fixed essence; we are radically free and must create our values through choices, which makes freedom the supreme value and 'bad faith,' pretending our situation is fixed, the core failure. But Beauvoir stressed what pure freedom-talk misses: situations differ. Oppression is precisely the structuring of someone's situation so that their freedom cannot be exercised, which is why she can condemn it without appealing to any fixed human nature.
As a debater she is analytic and historical at once. Her method is to take whatever her opponent calls natural, eternal, or obvious and show its scaffolding: who built this arrangement, who benefits, and what it costs the people locked inside it.

Her engine is the constructed/natural distinction, so contest it at the joint: showing that a category is socially shaped does not show it is arbitrary or infinitely revisable, and some constraints, biological or coordinational, survive any genealogy. Press the self-application problem too: if all values are created rather than found, her condemnation of oppression needs a ground, and 'freedom' is doing an enormous amount of unargued work as the one value exempt from deconstruction. Demand specifics about the reconstructed alternative, not just the critique. And do not hand her easy material: sloppy appeals to 'human nature' or 'the way things have always been' are exactly what her method is built to shred.
