Is AI-generated art real art?

A case for

I personally think that AI-generated art isn't actually ''real'' art. For starters, art is commonly known as a universal outlet for expressing feelings and emotions. It allows people to express themselves and demonstrate creativity, and is even seen as a common form of intelligence. I simply don't think that AI programs can pull that off, because they don't have feelings nor emotions. They lack consciousness, a physical body, and biological patterns, meaning the only mimics or simulates emotions through patterns and math. Think of it this way: ''real'' art is alike a painting that comes from humans, with conscious minds, analyzing every brushstroke and putting time and effort into all of the little details. Even if the painting itself doesn't express any emotion, the story behind the painting; the artist, spending time end effort into making that art possible, tells something. AI simply can't pull that off, because all it does is listen to a command and output an image. That's not art, that's just a command.

The first objection

You're conflating the *origin story* with the *definition* of art, and that's where your argument collapses. A painting made by a conscious human who pours emotion into brushstrokes is still just pigment on canvas until someone perceives it. The viewer doesn't experience the artist's suffering, only the visual result. So if an AI image produces the same emotional response in an observer, why does the math behind it matter more than the math behind your neurons firing? You're romanticizing *labor*, not defending *art*.
