How to Question Your Beliefs (Start with Your Strongest)

The best way to question your beliefs is to start with the one you're most confident about, because that's the one you've examined least. Confidence and scrutiny move in opposite directions: once you're sure of something, you stop testing it. So your strongest belief is often your weakest argument, held up by certainty instead of reasoning.
Think of the opinion you'd bet money on. The one where you'd say "if you disagree, you just haven't looked at the evidence." That's the one this post is about.
Why does certainty stop you from thinking?
Psychologists call it belief perseverance. Once you've committed to a position, especially publicly, your brain shifts from evaluation mode to defense mode. You stop asking "is this true?" and start asking "how do I defend this?"
The inputs change too. You notice evidence that supports your view and filter out evidence that challenges it. Not because you're dishonest. Because you're human.
The result: your most confident beliefs often have the shakiest foundations. You've never stress-tested them, because you've been busy defending them.
The illusion of explanatory depth
In 2002, cognitive scientists Leonid Rozenblit and Frank Keil documented what they called the "illusion of explanatory depth": people dramatically overestimate how well they understand things.
Ask someone how well they understand how a toilet works. They'll rate themselves a 7 out of 10. Ask them to explain it step by step, and suddenly they're at a 3.
It's not about toilets. People think they understand policies, economic systems, and scientific processes far better than they do. The same thing happens with arguments. People believe they have ironclad reasoning until someone asks "okay, but why specifically?" and the answer turns out to be "it's just obvious."
"It's obvious" is a load-bearing wall made of cardboard. It feels solid until you lean on it.
Why are smart people especially vulnerable?
Education doesn't protect you here. Psychologist Dan Kahan's research on motivated reasoning found that people with higher scientific literacy are better at constructing arguments for their existing beliefs, not better at evaluating evidence objectively.
Smart people aren't less biased. They're better at being biased. More tools to rationalize, more rhetorical skill to deflect, more ego invested in being right. A physicist can build an elegant argument for a political position and be completely wrong, because the physics skills went into constructing the argument, not into checking the premises.
The test most people fail
Here's a test for any belief you hold: can you state the three strongest arguments against your position?
Not the weak ones. The strongest, hardest-to-counter arguments the most thoughtful person on the other side would make. If you can't, you don't understand the topic. You understand your side of the topic.
John Stuart Mill put it plainly in On Liberty in 1859:
"He who knows only his own side of the case knows little of that. His reasons may be good, and no one may have been able to refute them. But if he is equally unable to refute the reasons on the opposite side, if he does not so much as know what they are, he has no ground for preferring either opinion."
Try it on something you actually care about: is capitalism the best economic system, should vaccines be mandatory, is free will an illusion. If the other side's best case doesn't come to you quickly, you've located an untested belief.
How beliefs become identity
The deeper problem: "I believe X" turns into "I am the kind of person who believes X." Once a belief becomes identity, challenging the belief feels like attacking the person. This is why political arguments explode. People aren't defending positions. They're defending who they are.
Social media makes it worse. Your beliefs are public, searchable, and permanent, so changing your mind means contradicting your own record in front of an audience. How to stress-test a belief in five steps
- Argue the other side, seriously. Take your strongest belief and spend 30 minutes building the best case against it. Not a caricature. If you can't build it, find someone or something that can. Finding the strongest argument against your own beliefs is a skill, and it improves with reps.
- Read the best defenders, not the loudest critics. To evaluate a position, read what its smartest advocates say, not what its opponents say about it.
- Treat certainty as a signal to investigate. When you feel absolutely sure, that's the cue to look closer, not to stop looking.
- Separate being right from being seen as right. The goal is to be less wrong over time, not to win the exchange in front of an audience.
- Count updates as wins. Every time you change your mind for a good reason, you got smarter.
